Working together gives kids better career choices and real results, Ministry of Education, Tertiary Education Commission

Trades Academies motivate students to get real, hands-on experience, an NCEA Level 2 qualification and a head-start on their future career. They were created by a partnership between schools, tertiary providers and employers and help bridge the gap between school, tertiary study and work.

The Youth Guarantee Trades Academy programme began in 2011 with nine academies and 700 students. There are now 24 Trades Academies involving 300 secondary schools and 6500 students. Participating students are more likely to achieve NCEA Level 2, resulting in a Return on Investment of $1.59 for every $1 invested. As well, Trades Academies give students a clear pathway into jobs and careers.
