Auckland Council wins Deloitte IPANZ Public Sector Excellence Awards 2016

Auckland Council’s Bylaws Review Programme won the Prime Minister’s Award at the Deloitte IPANZ Public Sector Excellence Awards 2016, held in Wellington last night.

The judges said that this programme was, “A highly complex activity undertaken over five years with evidence and outstanding results. [It was] a comprehensive, impressive, customer focused project.”

Working with industry and the community, Auckland Council reviewed 158 ‘legacy’ bylaws to achieve a coherent, sustainable set of regulations. The resulting 32 new bylaws will help the council respond more effectively to complex problems in Auckland and are exemplars for other local authorities.

The Council’s Review Programme also won the Excellence in Regulatory Systems Award. 

IPANZ President John Larkindale said, “The annual Public Sector Excellence Awards recognise and reward outstanding performances and achievements in the New Zealand public sector.

“This year the Awards attracted a record number of entries (92) from a large range of organisations. The winning and nominated projects show that public sector innovation is making a real difference to the lives of New Zealanders.”

Deloitte CEO, Thomas Pippos, congratulated all this year’s winners and finalists.

“In the coming decades shifting demographics and the introduction of new digital technologies will continue to drive change in the public sector and profoundly affect the way government delivers services. We will need more initiatives like the ones recognised at the Awards to navigate these future changes; and celebrating success along the way is an important part of this journey.”

The winning organisations across the nine Award categories were: New Zealand Police, Ministry of Justice, Inland Revenue, Department of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Education and Tertiary Education Commission (joint winners), Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation, Ministry for Primary Industries, and Auckland Council.

The Young Professional of the Year Award went to Mataroria Lyndon of Ko Awatea – Counties Manukau Health. He will receive an all-expense paid trip to attend a one-week leadership course run by the prestigious Mt Eliza Business School, in Melbourne.
